| Abstract |
Microwave photonic (MWP) filters are integral to modern microwave systems, offering advantages such as wide bandwidth, low loss, and immunity to electromagnetic interference. A critical requirement for these filters is steep roll-off, which enables precise spectral shaping and effective interference suppression. However, conventional MWP filters often face challenges in simultaneously achieving both steep transitions and high reconfigurability. This research addresses these limitations by demonstrating reconfigurable MWP filters with steep roll-off, leveraging a transversal filter structure driven by an optical microcomb source. The proposed approach facilitates the realization of various filter characteristics without hardware modifications. The methodology involves programming tap coefficients to achieve desired filter responses. Experimental demonstrations include four distinct
single-band MWP filters, exhibiting ultrahigh roll-off rates up to approximately 32.6 dB/GHz and a minimum 20-dB shape factor of about 1.15. Furthermore, the system demonstrates tunable band-pass filters with center frequencies ranging from 5 to 15 GHz and diverse dual-band MWP filter responses, all while maintaining validated steep roll-off. This reconfigurable MWP filter design provides a stable and versatile solution for applications demanding high spectral selectivity, including next-generation wireless networks, high-resolution radar imaging, and advanced biomedical sensing.
