OC6 project Phase III validation Project Details

Abstract

This M.Tech research direction focuses on the validation of aerodynamic loading experienced by a wind turbine rotor, specifically when subjected to significant motion induced by a floating support structure. The project involves the development and application of numerical models for a reference wind turbine, which are subsequently validated against empirical data. Experimental data for validation is derived from scaled-down tests, specifically a 1:75 scale model, conducted within a wind tunnel environment. The validation process encompasses both steady-state conditions, where the platform remains fixed, and unsteady conditions, characterized by harmonic oscillations of the platform in surge and pitch directions across various frequencies and amplitudes. These oscillations simulate variations in wind conditions

impacting the rotor. The core objective is to compare the predicted loads from numerical models with measured loads, such as thrust and torque, under these diverse operational scenarios. This research contributes to understanding the aerodynamic response of floating offshore wind turbines.
