Abstract

Ionic wind propulsion (IWP) represents an innovative thrust generation method, leveraging electric field acceleration of ionized air. This technology offers significant advantages, including silent operation, enhanced fuel efficiency, and reduced environmental impact compared to conventional combustion-based aircraft. However, its current low thrust-to-weight ratio fundamentally restricts its applicability to smaller platforms, such as unmanned aerial vehicles. This research evaluates the aviation potential of IWP by analyzing experimental data derived from various prototypes, including unmanned airships and the well-known MIT ion-propelled drone. The investigation focuses on critical performance metrics such as thrust generation capabilities, power consumption profiles, and the underlying physical behavior of IWP systems. The analysis reveals several inherent challenges that

impede the scalability of IWP for larger aircraft applications. These fundamental limitations encompass the necessity for high voltage operation, intrinsic efficiency constraints, and the generation of comparatively low absolute thrust. By delineating these performance boundaries, this review aims to provide a realistic perspective on the future role of IWP in sustainable aviation solutions.
