SEISMIC SOIL MICROZONATION TURKEY BRIDGING Project Details

Abstract

The study reviews seismic soil microzonation in Turkey in relation to the Turkish Earthquake Code (TEC) and the geotechnical challenges such as data deficiency, low regional capability, and poor regulatory frameworks. Furthermore, the study compares Turkey's microzonations to the Eurocode, Japanese, American (NEHRP/ASCE/IBC), and Chinese microzonations, focusing on geo-technical hazard analyses (liquefaction and landslides) and site-specific ground motion analyses for geotechnical hazard equals to soil classification. The study also compares the site investigation methodologies of the above countries and Turkey, particularly the use of borehole drilling, in-situ testing (SPT, CPT), geophysical testing (MASW), and the generation of seismic microzonation maps. These maps are required for determining the shear wave velocity,

ground amplitude, liquefaction susceptibility, and for urban planning and seismic risk. The findings show that most countries have used site-specific assessments and soil classification based on Vs; however, differences in the regulatory framework and its enforcement are widely observed.
