Antimicrobial Materials Used Coating Dental Project Details

Abstract

This M. Tech project aims at the development and characterization of antimicrobial materials for coatings of dental implant surfaces. The primary focus is to understand the materials' ability to promote tissue healing whilst also possessing antimicrobial activity and ensuring that the materials are biocompatible, non-toxic, and do not harm the host cells. Special attention will be given to materials that exhibit significant bacteriostatic and bactericidal effects towards common oral pathogens. The project will aim at an extensive review of the various types of antimicrobial coatings comprising of natural bactericides, antimicrobial polymers, and composites of bioactive glass/polymer and various surface modification strategies. Special focus will be on the synthesis and characterization

of coatings based on antibacterial peptides which are known to possess high antimicrobial activity, good biocompatibility, and great durability. Methodology will include in vitro studies to evaluate the reduction of colonization by bacteria and preliminary studies on biocompatibility. The primary aim is to identify and further optimize the most promising candidates for sustained antimicrobial activity and protection against peri-implant infection, thus setting the foundation for future pre-clinical studies.
