Sustainable nanofibrous membranes air filtration Project Details

Abstract

In order to respond to the growing global need for innovative materials and engineering strategies that focus on sustainability, the creation of new advanced materials is critical. The favourable properties of some nanofibrous membranes, such as soil filtration, water filtration, and the removal of oils and other contaminants in the environment, make it possible to build them for a wide range of uses. However, since most traditional synthetic membranes are made using petroleum-based synthetic polymers, they become even more problematic from an environmental standpoint, as petrochemical raw materials are non-renewable and synthetic membranes are not biodegradable. This study outlines the recent progress made in the development of sustainable forms of

nanofibrous membranes incorporating biobased and biodegradable raw materials. Additionally, it identifies the various aspects of sustainable circular design that can be applied throughout the entire life cycle of the membrane to minimize its environmental footprint. Addressing the key challenges associated with enhancing the mechanical strength and durability as well as the long-term stability of biopolymer-based nanofibers, is essential in order to broaden the scope of practical applications. This study endeavors to fulfill these challenges through the innovative application of advanced materials and engineering to facilitate the increased utilization of sustainable forms of nanofibrous membranes.
