| Abstract |
Given the ongoing worldwide crisis of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) due to the rapid spread of pathogens like methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), there is an urgent need to identify new therapeutic targets. Potential new therapeutic targets are marine-derived antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) which have shown potential antimicrobial and anticancer activities. For this M.Tech project, I will conduct a detailed computational study of marine AMPs, concentrating on new discovery strategies and detailing their multifaceted mechanisms and associated biomedical applications. Specifically, this study will address critical issues related to their clinical use, such as instability and the cost-effective large-scale production of AMPs. This research will aim to devise compositional designs that improve the therapeutic
indices of AMPs by rationally enhancing their efficacy while also improving stability, safety, and efficacy via synergy to overcome drug-resistance. This study illustrates the need to expand the use of marine-derived AMPs as alternatives to treat infections caused by drug-resistant pathogens, enhancing the potential of computational biology to develop new antimicrobial agents.
