Abstract

Entomopathogenic fungi (EPF) can be environmentally friendly replacements for synthetic chemical pesticides. However, many barriers such as high production costs, formulation instability, sensitivity to environmental changes, and delayed or inconsistent effectiveness hinder their widespread use. The goal of this paper is to show that some of these barriers can be overcome by using EPF strains that can establish themselves as endophytes. Endophytic entomopathogenic fungi (EEPF) also provide a biocontrol function in agriculture by inducing the release of certain volatiles that attract insect pest predators. Because they persist within the plant, it is quite likely they will reduce plant pest control costs. In addition, EEPF can enhance the growth of the

plant and also make the plant more resistant to various abiotic stresses. Preliminary studies suggest that, through horizontal gene transfer from the plants themselves, the EEPF acquire a number of important attributes including virulence and versatility. Consequently, it is reasonable to believe that keeping EEPF as endophytes will offset the loss of virulence caused by repeated in vitro subculturing on artificial media. However, numerous challenges still exist such as variability of endophytic colonization in the field and host specific barriers. Therefore, additional research is needed to develop sustainable agricultural practices.
