Optimized Vehicle-Level Comparative Analysis BLDC Project Details
| Abstract |
Rational design of propulsion systems for electric two-wheelers needs efficient, smooth torque delivery and optimal battery use. In this regard, Brushless DC (BLDC) and Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor (PMSM) drives are most commonly used, but separate analyses are often done in regards to the literature, without considering the full vehicle and battery system dynamics. This study aims to fill this gap by doing a vehicle-level comparative study of BLDC and PMSM motor drives, designed to operate under similar conditions. Each propulsion system's battery, inverter, and motor drive, and mechanical load, are encapsulated in a single MATLAB/Simulink model. For this study, the BLDC motor drive uses six-step commutation, while the PMSM
motor drive uses Field Oriented Control (FOC). Consequently, this study rigorously analyzes the differences in performance of torque ripple, battery current, state of charge, and overall system efficiency. Overall, the simulation results yielded an increase in battery, torque ripple, and peak current by 7-10%, and thus provided valuable information for the design and improvement of propulsion systems for electric two-wheelers.
