Abstract

The purpose of this study is to help design a compact millimeter-wave transceiver for the development of In-Band Full Duplex Communication (IBFD) over the 60 GHz unlicensed band. Among the frequencies available in the 60 GHz band, extremely high data rates can be achieved with very short-range wireless connections, such as for contactless testing and board-to-board communications. This is due to the vast amounts of bandwidth available along with the natural atmospheric attenuation that reduces interference from distant links. One of the main challenges that an IBFD system designer faces is the high amount of self-interference that occurs when a device transmits and receives on the same frequency at the

same time. Self-interference becomes critical when it is necessary to demodulate the signal that is wanted and self-interference cancellation is necessary in order to achieve data rates very close to 10 Gbit/s. This study is proposing a solution for the high self-interference cancellation required for a compact and reliable IBFD operation on an IBFD system. This study will utilize a dual-polarized antenna with high isolation between the transmit and receive paths for the purpose of self-interference cancellation in order to provide reliable, low-power, short-range communication in the 60 GHz. This study presents the different limits of several design options that can be used to achieve a robust IBFD operation in

the millimeter-wave range.
