Assessment Redefined: Educational Assessment Meets AI – ChatGPT Challenges

This conceptual paper outlines the changes to educational assessment in the context of the growing presence of generative artificial intelligence (AI) tools, including artificial intelligence (AI) tools such as ChatGPT, and their impact on higher education. Because of their advanced ability to generate text, solve problems and provide assistance to learners in completing assessment tasks, the challenges posed by the advanced capabilities of AI to traditional evaluation methods are numerous. This paper aims to describe and discuss certain alternatives to assessment methods designed to avoid the negative consequences of AI tool use, while recognizing the benefits of using AI tools as educational aids. Some alternatives include oral exams, presentations, project-based

assessments, assessments of professional practice, assessments in real time during class, practice-based assessments, collaborative evaluations, and evaluations for psychotechnical purposes. Taken together, the aim is to avoid the use of artificial intelligence in the direct execution of assessments. The aim is to develop artificial intelligence in order to promote the development of higher order thinking and critical thinking. The paper provides examples of the use of AI as a supplementary tool in various disciplines: language and literature, the sciences, mathematics, history and social sciences, computer science and engineering, as well as business and economics. In sharing the view that AI should not replace teaching staff, the paper emphasizes the importance

of addressing the ethical issues associated with upholding academic integrity in the reassessment of educational assessments that adopt a contemporary approach to assessment within the framework of educational assessment.
