Real-Time Intelligent IoT-Based Drum Brake Project Details

Abstract

This research outlines the creation and assessment of an innovative, real-time automated system for monitoring the wear of drum brake linings. The goal is to develop an automated system that captures the limitations of traditional manual inspection of brake linings which is time-based, subject to the inspectors' opinion, and is likely to miss critical levels of wear. The author develops the research within the framework of the Research and Development (R&D) model. This model consists of a system design phase, a prototype development phase, and a testing phase. The principal design of the prototype is an ESP32 microcontroller combined with a VL53L0X sensor. This combination allows for real-time measurement of

the remaining thickness of the brake lining and provides measurement data for the application of a rule-based algorithm to determine the state of the brakes. The brakes are classified into three levels of conditions: SAFE, WARNING, and DANGER. In order to experimentally validate the functionality of the proposed system, a battery of 15 tests was conducted within a thickness range of 1.0 and 10.0 mm for the brake linings. The average measurement accuracy of the proposed system was 96.0% and the mean absolute error (MAE) and root mean square error (RMSE) were 0.13 mm and 0.15 mm, respectively. All samples are classified and classified with 100% accuracy within the brake

conditions. The mean response time of the system was 1.27 seconds, demonstrating that the proposed system is capable of real-time operation.
