Environmentally Safe and Just Pharmacy: A Framework and Action Plan for Operating within the Earth System Boundary for Novel Entities

This M.Tech project aims to study the application and possible evaluation of the "Environmentally Safe and Just Pharmacy" framework concerning the effects of active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) on the environment. The framework has four main criteria and twelve sub-criteria; it attempts to have each phase of the pharmaceutical life cycle fit within the Earth System Boundaries for Novel Entities. Current practices within the pharmaceutical industry frequently fall short of these criteria and contribute to environmental pollution, repeated and widespread pollution of the environment beyond the concentrations deemed safe for ecosystems, and the spread of antimicrobial resistance. Other significant risks include a lack of environmental consideration early in the drug design

process, and in particular, the severe lack of information and data in the environment of low- and middle-income countries, as well as the environmentally unjust situation that unjustly burdens the vulnerable groups of the population. This research will assess the framework in conjunction with a study of advanced treatment technologies for wastewater that involve the use of constructed wetlands to reduce the release of APIs into the water. This project aims to assess the extent to which these so-called nature-based solutions can help align the management of pharmaceutical waste with the proposed criteria of environmental safety and justice, as well as how this already fits into the 2050 roadmap for

the sustainable management of pharmaceuticals and the protection of the environment.
