Ionospheric Plasma Electron Density Measurement Project Details

Abstract

The ionosphere significantly influences radio frequency (RF) signal propagation, including Global Positioning System (GPS) satellite communications. Disturbances such as equatorial plasma bubbles (EPB) can scatter these signals, leading to communication disruptions and navigational inaccuracies. To investigate these conditions, spacecraft employ instruments like impedance probes, which measure surrounding plasma by applying a small electrical signal to a sensor and determining electron density from the resulting impedance. This research focuses on enhancing the modeling and interpretation of impedance probe measurements. A numerical methodology is developed, utilizing electric field data derived from computer simulations to accurately calculate the impedance for realistic probe and spacecraft geometries. The study meticulously analyzes the influence of the

plasma sheath on the probe’s resonant frequencies. The findings are rigorously compared with empirical measurements obtained from the Scintillation Prediction Observation Research Task (SPORT) satellite mission. This comparison reveals that while sheath effects do not impact the fundamental plasma density measurement, their comprehensive understanding is crucial for aligning real-world data with theoretical predictions. Furthermore, the work includes the design of a novel impedance probe circuit, contributing to advancements in space plasma diagnostics.
