More Less Sustainable It Function Project Details

Abstract

The successful integration of sustainability principles within information technology (IT) functions is paramount for cultivating resilient supply chains, ensuring compliance with evolving regulatory frameworks, addressing diverse stakeholder expectations, and contributing to global climate change mitigation efforts. Facilitating systemic organizational change in this domain requires a profound disclosure and comprehension of the multifaceted sustainability challenges confronting contemporary enterprises. This research undertakes an empirical case study methodology, focusing on a sustainability transformation project implemented within the corporate IT function of a large-scale manufacturing company. Data collection involved the systematic gathering of 83 discussion notes throughout the project's lifecycle. Leveraging theoretical constructs of cognitive frames and sensemaking, the investigation illuminates the intricate processes

by which managers navigate sustainability challenges, encompassing both internal operational dynamics and external environmental pressures. The study reveals that a predominant 'business case' cognitive frame tends to constrain the breadth of identified challenges, manifesting through four discernible strategies. In contrast, a 'paradoxical' cognitive frame actively challenges these limitations by exposing four specific deficiencies inherent in the business case approach. This research significantly advances the information systems literature on sustainable IT implementation, offering critical insights into the underlying reasons for the often slow, complex, and uncertain trajectory of sustainability projects within corporate IT functions.
