Structural Performance Double castellated Steel Project Details

Abstract

This project studies how double castellated steel beams with expanded webs and new opening shapes perform structurally. Castellated beams improve the strength‑to‑weight ratio of regular I‑beams. They are made by cutting the web, separating the halves, and welding them back together. This creates hexagonal, rectangular, or circular openings that increase load capacity and stiffness in long‑span structures. The study looks at how two design factors affect the beam’s behavior under point loads: the number of web openings and the cutting angle, which is tested at 45Β°, 52Β°, and 58Β°. Both lab tests and computer models are used to measure load capacity, deflection, and stiffness. Results show that using fewer openings

greatly increases the load the beam can carry and lowers its deflection. The analysis also finds that a 52Β° cutting angle gives the best mix of strength and stiffness. The work provides detailed guidance for modeling, simulating, and testing these optimized steel beams, helping engineers design advanced structures and large construction projects.
