Integrated fixed-film activated sludge partial Project Details
| Abstract |
Landfill leachate treatment presents significant challenges due to high ammonium concentrations and refractory organic matter. Traditional biological nitrogen removal processes are often energy-intensive and require external carbon sources. This research-based project explores the implementation of an integrated fixed-film activated sludge partial nitritation-anammox (IFAS-PN/A) system to optimize nitrogen removal from landfill leachate. The core methodology focuses on the rapid establishment of the PN/A process by selectively suppressing nitrite-oxidizing bacteria (NOB). This suppression is achieved through the targeted thermal inactivation of nitrite oxidoreductase (NXR), the key enzyme responsible for nitrite oxidation. By applying controlled thermal shocks to the activated sludge, the activity of NOB is minimized while ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB) and anaerobic
ammonium-oxidizing (anammox) bacteria are preserved and enriched within the biofilm and suspended biomass phases. The research direction involves evaluating the kinetic parameters, nitrogen removal efficiency, and microbial community dynamics under varying operational temperatures and hydraulic retention times. This study provides structuring and analytical guidance for developing energy-efficient, low-carbon footprint wastewater treatment configurations suitable for highly concentrated industrial and municipal landfill effluents.
