Beyond 1:1 assumption Quantifying realistic Project Details
| Abstract |
This project tackles a key problem in lifeβcycle assessments (LCAs) of electric vehicles (EVs). Most LCAs assume a 1:1 replacement: every EV sold is thought to take the place of one conventional vehicle (CV). To find a realistic replacement rate, we study Chinaβs βDualβcreditβ policy using panel data from 96 automakers covering 2016β2023. We apply a continuous DifferenceβinβDifferences (DiD) method and estimate it together with Seemingly Unrelated Regressions (SUR) to track how EV and CV sales change. The results show the policy pushes EV sales up while pulling CV sales down. The measured displacement ratio is 88 %, meaning each policyβdriven EV sale replaces only 0.88 CVs. This reveals that
the market actually expands rather than simply swapping cars. The project offers stepβbyβstep guidance for adding this empirically derived ratio into LCA models, which helps avoid overstating the environmental gains of transport decarbonization policies. Support includes building the econometric model, testing how LCA results vary with different displacement rates, and evaluating policy effects.
