Toward sustainable cost-effective hydrocarbon remediation Project Details

Abstract

This research project provides a structured methodology for evaluating alcohol-efficient oil-in-water emulsions designed to remediate diesel-contaminated soils. Traditional alcohol flooding techniques require high concentrations of alcohol, which introduces economic, toxicological, and operational challenges, particularly in heterogeneous and unsaturated vadose zones. To address these limitations, this study outlines the formulation and characterization of low-alcohol emulsions stabilized with surfactant and biopolymer agents. Specifically, the system utilizes 1-pentanol (6.25–25% v/v), sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) as a surfactant, and xanthan gum as a rheology modifier to enhance stability and induce shear-thinning behavior. Project development support focuses on analyzing the rheological properties, stability profiles, and transport dynamics of these formulations. Experimental evaluation is structured around

one-dimensional sand column tests and two-dimensional tank simulations under both saturated and unsaturated conditions. The guidance provided assists in modeling the displacement mechanisms and capillary-gravity interactions that govern hydrocarbon recovery. By optimizing the concentration of xanthan gum to 2000 ppm, the formulation achieves high-efficiency diesel recovery at significantly reduced alcohol volumes, offering a sustainable and cost-effective pathway for subsurface environmental remediation.
