FPGA Controller Drive BLDC Motor Project Details
| Abstract |
Brushless DC (BLDC) motors are popular for electricβvehicle (EV) propulsion because they pack a lot of power into a small space, work over a wide speed range, and run very efficiently. Getting the best dynamic performance still needs very accurate electronic commutation and fast, highβbandwidth control loops. Conventional microcontrollers and digital signal processors (DSPs) often canβt keep upβtheyβre limited in how quickly they execute instructions and in how many tasks they can run at the same time. This work looks at using a fieldβprogrammable gate array (FPGA) to control BLDC motors in EVs. An FPGAβs parallelβprocessing structure lets the controller generate custom pulseβwidthβmodulated (PWM) signals, switch the motor phases quickly,
and run feedback loops at high speed. The approach includes: * Building a model of the BLDC motor drive system. * Writing the control logic in VHDL or Verilog. * Running hardwareβinβtheβloop simulations to check both transient and steadyβstate behavior. Putting the control functions on an FPGA cuts the number of separate components, improves reliability, and provides the wide controlβloop bandwidth that EVs demand during rapid acceleration or deceleration. The resulting design offers a clear roadmap for assessing digital controller architectures in todayβs automotive propulsion systems.
