Advanced downstream process design recovery Project Details
| Abstract |
This project uses research and computer modeling to design a better downstream purification process for two valuable aroma chemicals: 2‑phenylethanol (2‑PE) and 2‑phenylethyl acetate (2‑PEAc). These compounds are made by microbes, but their toxicity and high boiling points make traditional recovery methods inefficient. To solve this, we look at a flexible dividing‑wall column (DWC) that can treat the organic phase after centrifugation. The simulation examines two main options: * Separate 2‑PE and 2‑PEAc directly from the solvent. * Convert 2‑PE into pure 2‑PEAc by reactive esterification, meeting changing market needs. The model also recovers ethanol that is co‑produced in the water phase, improving the process’s economics and sustainability. Using thermodynamic
models and process‑simulation software, we evaluate energy use, column size, and product purity. The result is a detailed, practical guide for designing adaptable, multi‑product downstream separation systems in biochemical engineering.
