Bioinert ceramics scaffolds bone tissue Project Details
| Abstract |
This project provides research direction and implementation support for the design and analysis of bioinert ceramic scaffolds manufactured via laser-based powder bed fusion (PBF-LB) for bone tissue engineering applications. Focusing on oxide-based ceramics such as alumina and yttria-stabilized zirconia, alongside non-oxide nitride-based ceramics, the study evaluates the structural, mechanical, and biological requirements necessary for critical-sized bone defect repair. The technical framework guides students through CAD-based modeling of porous scaffold architectures, followed by finite element analysis (FEA) to simulate mechanical performance under physiological loading conditions. Furthermore, the integration of these bioinert structures with functionalized coatings for localized drug delivery systems (DDS), stem cells, and growth factors is systematically analyzed. By establishing
a structured methodology for parameter selection in PBF-LB processing, this work addresses the challenges of thermal stress and cracking inherent in ceramic additive manufacturing. Ultimately, the project delivers a comprehensive design guide and simulation workflow to assist undergraduate researchers in developing personalized, high-strength orthopedic implants.
