Mechanical performance evaluation fiber composites Project Details
| Abstract |
This project studies how strong and how well fiberβreinforced polymer (FRP) composites work when they contain builtβin wireless sensors. Putting multiβcomponent sensors inside lets us monitor the structure in real time, but it also creates shape changes that can cause local stress spikes, tiny cracks, and early delamination. To tackle these problems, we use a full method that combines parametric finiteβelement modeling with lab tests. The computer model looks at how stress spreads and how cracks might grow around different sensor shapes placed in the laminate. We pay special attention to how the fibers are arranged near the sensor. Two cases are compared: one where the reinforcing fibers are cut,
and another where they are smoothly bent around the sensor and its dielectric channels. We then tweak the sensorβs outer shape in a parametric way to lower stress gradients and stop cracks from starting when the part is pulled or bent. In the lab, we test real composite samples that contain the optimized sensor mockβups to check that the simulations are accurate. The result is a stepβbyβstep guide for designing smart composites with builtβin electronics, while keeping load capacity and fatigue life as high as possible.
