Interplays between plants environmental factors Project Details
| Abstract |
Ecological restoration on mined lands often uses sprayβseeding of external soil to reduce slope failures. This project looks at what mechanical and environmental factors control how strongly the roots of the main pioneer plant, Artemisia gmelinii, hold onto different slopesβrocky, geotechnical and soil. We examine how plant traits (like height and underground biomass) interact with soil characteristics (such as silt content, nutrient levels, and slope angle). From this we build a quantitative framework that predicts how well vegetation can reinforce a slope. Experiments and structuralβequation modeling show that: * Soil slopes have much higher root pullβout resistance than rocky slopes. * Soil nutrients and texture have a stronger effect on
both geotechnical and soil slopes. The project also provides handsβon support for students, including: * Setting up a pullβout test device. * Analyzing soil parameters. * Running statistical models of rootβsoil interaction. In the end, the research gives practical engineering guidance for choosing the best plant traits and soil setups to improve slope stability after mining. It also offers a clear method for evaluating bioβgeotechnical stabilization techniques.
