The UTMOST-NS fully digital wide-field Project Details
| Abstract |
This research resource examines the digital signal processing (DSP) and RF system upgrades implemented for the North-South (NS) arm of the UTMOST-NS transit radio interferometer. Operating at a centre frequency of 831 MHz with a bandwidth of 806.25 to 856.25 MHz, the system revitalises a 19,800 square-metre collecting area consisting of two co-linear paraboloid cylindrical reflectors (each 778 m by 12.7 m). The upgrade focuses on the complete signal chain, spanning from the dual linear polarisation antenna feeds, through analog transport and high-speed digitisation, to the digital signal processing backend. Designed for high-throughput pulsar timing and real-time searches for Fast Radio Bursts (FRBs), the system achieves a wide primary beam
of 12.7 by 2.5 degrees. For M.Tech researchers, this paper provides a valuable blueprint for studying wideband digital beamforming, multi-channel digitisation, and real-time transient detection algorithms. The resource supports students in analyzing the trade-offs between analog signal transport and digital processing architectures, evaluating system temperature performance, and modeling dispersion-measure search algorithms for astrophysical signal processing.
