Abstract

This research investigates the comparative efficacy of High Damping Rubber Bearings (HDRB) in mitigating seismic responses for low-rise and mid-rise building typologies. Specifically, the study focuses on 4-story and 8-story office buildings situated in regions prone to Indonesian seismic activity, where structural natural periods often align with high-energy seismic response plateaus, leading to amplified structural reactions. A comprehensive evaluation is conducted using Non-Linear Time History Analysis (NLTHA) in the primary X-direction, assessing critical parameters such as period elongation, lateral displacement, inter-story drift, peak floor acceleration, and base shear reduction. The findings indicate that HDRB implementation effectively transforms structural behavior towards a near-rigid-body motion. Quantitatively, this leads to a reduction in

normalized inter-story drift to 0.26 and 0.12, alongside a substantial attenuation of base shear by up to 71%. Additionally, peak floor acceleration is significantly curtailed, ranging from 51% to 59%, thereby safeguarding non-structural components. The analysis concludes that while base isolation offers enhanced seismic protection across both building scales, its effectiveness in intercepting seismic energy and preserving operational continuity is notably more pronounced in mid-rise structures. This underscores HDRB as a crucial strategy for augmenting functional resilience, particularly with increasing building height.
