Abstract

This review paper redefines 4D manufacturing as a computer-augmented design methodology, where geometric, material, and structural properties are intentionally programmed for controlled, time-dependent evolution. While existing research predominantly focuses on shape morphing in smart materials, this work advocates for a broader computational understanding of time-evolving functionality. The foundational computational modeling frameworks are explored, encompassing internal state variables, constitutive evolution laws, and multiphysics finite element formulations. The discussion initiates with bulk-driven systems, such as shape memory alloys and polymers, to establish the fundamental constitutive and computational principles governing time-dependent functional behavior. A significant emphasis is placed on surface-driven 4D manufacturing, where elements like residual stresses, gradient microstructures, and surface integrity are

identified as programmable drivers for long-term performance. Unlike the reversible actuation characteristic of bulk-responsive systems, surface-driven mechanisms are localized, depth-dependent, and frequently irreversible, bearing critical implications for fatigue, wear, and overall structural reliability. The current underrepresentation of these surface effects in computational analyses is highlighted, and the paper examines various modeling approaches pertinent to surface processing to address this analytical gap.
