Abstract

Each generation of the Wireless Communication Networks (WCN) evolves and reinvents itself, with Artificial Intelligence (AI) poised to be the game changer for the forthcoming sixth-generation (6G) systems. This paper examines the potential of AI and Machine Learning (ML) to fulfill the objectives of 6G, including ultra-high data rates, ultra-low latency, ubiquitous connectivity, etc. These characteristics are critical for advanced applications of the future like smart cities, self-driving cars, immersive holographic telepresence, and the tactile internet. This paper focuses on the various roles of AI in the infrastructure of 6G with respect to some of the prominent AI paradigms like deep learning, reinforcement learning, federated learning, and explainable AI. It

explores the joint application of these AI concepts and techniques with the various functionality core of the network in relation to the challenges of scalability, security, and energy efficiency. It also examines the extent to which AI analytics can be applied in the different service areas of 6G such as Ultra-Reliable Low-Latency Communication (URLLC), Enhanced Mobile Broadband (eMBB), Massive Machine Type Communication (mMTC), and Integrated Sensing and Communication (ISAC). The paper examines the implications on standardization, ethics, environmental sustainability, and the 6G ecosystem. It also intends to highlight the state-of-the-art AI solutions applied to WCN to facilitate researchers in future endeavors.
