Adaptive PI Control Hybrid Battery-Supercapacitor Project Details
| Abstract |
This research investigates the enhancement of safety, reliability, and performance in off-grid Photovoltaic (PV) systems that integrate hybrid battery and Supercapacitor (SC) storage. The core approach involves the application of Adaptive Proportional-Integral (API) controllers. Adaptive hybrid power management is employed to ensure continuous and safe electricity supply to DC loads, concurrently mitigating voltage fluctuations arising from abnormal operational conditions. A significant contribution of this framework is the online API controller, which is integral to the hybrid power management strategy. Its primary objectives include safeguarding the DC-link from potential damage, achieving faster system response, and improving the voltage stability of the power generation output. The proposed system architecture was simulated within
a MATLAB environment, encompassing an off-grid PV setup integrated with batteries and SCs, designed to maintain a stable DC load. Simulation results indicate that the API controller significantly enhances DC-link voltage stability when compared to conventional fixed PI controllers. This improvement is particularly evident under dynamic conditions such as sudden environmental changes and varying load demands, where traditional fixed PI controllers often necessitate extensive fine-tuning through various optimization techniques to achieve comparable performance. The adaptive nature of the proposed control strategy thus offers a robust solution for standalone renewable energy systems.
