Advances Genomics Crops Adapting Climate Project Details
| Abstract |
Climate change threatens the worldβs food supply, so we need crop varieties that can survive harsher conditions. The old way of boosting yieldsβusing lots of chemical fertilizers and pesticidesβcanβt keep going because it drains natural resources. This project shifts from relying on a single reference genome to using plant panβgenomics, which captures all the genetic variation in a species. By processing large amounts of sequencing data, we look for the parts of the genome that are shared by all plants (core regions) and the parts that differ (variable regions). We then link those regions to traits that help plants cope with climate stress, such as drought tolerance, salt resistance, and
pest immunity. Our approach builds panβgenomic graphs on a computer and feeds them into breeding models that speed up the search for useful genes. Bioinformatics pipelines map genetic differencesβlike singleβnucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and structural variants (SVs)βto the observed traits. The resulting framework gives clear steps for assessing genetic diversity and for creating molecular markers that can be used in markerβassisted selection. In the end, we provide a solid analytical workflow that supports genomicβassisted breeding of climateβresilient crops, helping agriculture stay sustainable as temperatures rise.
