Assessing Feasibility Gravitational Vortex Turbines Project Details
| Abstract |
This study looks at the design, optimization, and performance of a gravitational vortex water turbine for small, offβgrid hydropower in remote hilly areas. The turbine uses gravityβdriven water flow to create a steady vortex in a cylindrical or conical basin. The vortex turns a runner, converting kinetic energy into electricity. To understand the fluid behavior, the airβwater interface, and the velocity field inside the basin, we run CFD simulations with ANSYS Fluent. We focus on how two key design choicesβ the number of turbine blades and their orientationβ affect hydraulic efficiency, torque, and rotational speed. By modeling the multiphase flow, we get guidance on shaping the basin and runner for
lowβhead, lowβflow streams typical of remote sites. The results show that gravitational vortex systems can be ecoβfriendly, lowβmaintenance power sources for offβgrid communities. This work provides clear directions for engineering design, numerical modeling, and parametric optimization of microβhydropower projects, supporting sustainable rural electrification.
