Assessment Human Health Risk Surface Project Details
| Abstract |
This research investigates the contamination levels of toxic elements in surface soils and their associated human health risks within Arak City, Iran. The study addresses environmental pollution stemming from industrial activities, population growth, and vehicular emissions. A total of 30 surface soil samples, collected from 0 to 20 cm depth in June 2016, were analyzed for lead (Pb), zinc (Zn), copper (Cu), nickel (Ni), arsenic (As), chromium (Cr), and cadmium (Cd) using Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy (AAS). The findings indicated that the mean concentrations of most analyzed toxic elements, excluding arsenic, exceeded global background values. Further assessment using the Top Enrichment Factor (TEF) revealed significant enrichment for nickel, chromium, lead, and
copper. The Potential Ecological Risk (PER) index categorized the overall risk as high to very high. Human health risk assessment demonstrated that Hazard Index (HI) values were consistently higher for children compared to adults across all elements. Additionally, the carcinogenic risk (CR) for chromium in children was identified with an average value of 0.001, highlighting a potential health concern. This study provides critical data for environmental management and public health protection in urban industrial areas.
