Abstract

The Aral Sea Basin suffers from substantial losses in its water resources which supports the basin's agricultural productivity. This research aims at determining the quantity and quality of water resources in the Uzbekistan segment of the Amu Darya Basin. The analysis of the available data obtained from a number of previously conducted studies and field measurements focusing on the concentrations of heavy metals and long-term concentration of minerals in the river water, as well as agricultural drainage flow were conducted. The sources of the data were government agencies including the Hydrometeorological Service Agency of Uzbekistan and Ministry of Water Resources of Uzbekistan. To further clarify the causes of changes in

the quality of water, the Pearson correlation coefficients were calculated to consider the impact of climate on the mineralization of Amu Darya River (ADR) and drainage water at different hydraulic stations and regions. The results showed an increase in the mineralization of the water of Amu Darya River from upstream to downstream on the stretch of the river of 1.35 to 1.74 times. At the same time, the content of heavy metals such as copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), and chromium (Cr (VI)) increased significantly. The concentration of Cu increased by 1.1 to 1.5 times, Zn by 1.1 to 2.6 times and Cr (VI) by 1.1 to 1.8 times. All these

justifies the need for the region to streamline on water resources management.
