Balancing Color Stability Mechanical Performance Project Details

Abstract

This project looks at how to fine‑tune vegetable tannin recipes so that sustainable sole leather keeps its color and stays strong. Conventional tanning often sacrifices either the look or the strength of the leather when it is repeatedly loaded. To solve this, we test leather treated with different natural tannins for fracture toughness, resistance to crack growth, and fatigue behavior. We run tensile tests, dynamic mechanical analysis, and cyclic fatigue tests to see how the collagen matrix deforms and fails. At the same time, we use spectrophotometry to check how well the color holds up under accelerated aging. By linking the chemical makeup of each formulation to its mechanical results,

we create a clear method for making high‑performance, eco‑friendly leather. Combining solid‑mechanics ideas with material chemistry lets us understand how the density of tannin cross‑links affects crack start and growth, helping design footwear soles that are both durable and color‑stable.
