Abstract

This study looks at a cup‑shaped ultra‑wideband (UWB) microstrip patch antenna that is tuned for sub‑6 GHz 5G, WLAN, and Licensed Assisted Access (LAA) bands. The antenna uses an FR4‑epoxy substrate and is fed by an inset feed. The radiating patch has a circular ring slot, and the ground plane contains modified rectangular slots that form a Defective Ground Structure (DGS). These slots change the current flow, which widens the impedance bandwidth and raises the gain. HFSS simulations show that the antenna works from 4.04 GHz to 6.6 GHz. This gives a bandwidth of 2.56 GHz and a peak gain of 2.27 dB. The range covers the New Radio (NR)

band, the sub‑6 GHz n‑79 band (4.44–5.0 GHz), WLAN (5.15–5.35 GHz), and LAA bands. Fried Engineers offers academic guidance, simulation setup, and documentation help so M.Tech students can study the antenna’s electromagnetic behavior, explore how parameters affect performance, and follow the optimization steps for this DGS‑based patch design.
