Bulk Tungsten Fiber-Reinforced Tungsten Wf/W Project Details
| Abstract |
This research direction focuses on the structural development and mechanical evaluation of bulk tungsten fiber-reinforced tungsten (Wf/W) composites utilizing advanced yarn-based textile preforms. Conventional single-fiber architectures often suffer from limited homogeneity and poor reproducibility due to the inherent rigidity of thick tungsten filaments. To address these limitations, this project explores the implementation of radial braided tungsten yarns, consisting of multiple fine core and sleeve filaments, as the primary warp material. The manufacturing methodology involves a layer-by-layer chemical vapor deposition (CVD) process to synthesize bulk composites using two distinct weft configurations: single filaments and radial braided yarns. To evaluate the mechanical performance, electrical discharge machining (EDM) is utilized to section the
fabricated composites into standardized KLST-type specimens. Subsequent three-point bending tests are conducted to analyze the pseudo-ductile behavior, energy dissipation mechanisms, and structural integrity of the composites at room temperature. The project provides comprehensive guidance on the microstructural characterization, EDM slicing parameters, and mechanical testing protocols required to validate the performance of these high-temperature materials for extreme environment applications.
