Design preparation electromechanical implant prototype Project Details

Abstract

This project focuses on the design, fabrication, and evaluation of an electromechanical implant prototype engineered for controlled, on-demand drug delivery. Utilizing advanced additive manufacturing techniques, including Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM), Selective Laser Sintering (SLS), and MultiJet Fusion (MJF), hollow cylindrical implant chambers are constructed to house a model therapeutic agent, such as pentoxifylline. The active release mechanism is controlled by sealing the chamber with a thin, electrochemically responsive gold membrane. Upon the application of a low-voltage electrical signal, the membrane undergoes controlled dissolution, thereby releasing the encapsulated drug dosage. This research provides implementation support for evaluating the structural integrity, printing resolution, and release kinetics of the fabricated prototypes under simulated

physiological conditions. By integrating electrical control with mechanical containment, the system offers a viable pathway for personalized medicine and remote-controlled therapeutic interventions. The project provides comprehensive guidance on selecting optimal 3D printing parameters, membrane deposition techniques, and electrical triggering circuits to achieve reliable, low-voltage activation for biomedical applications. Students will analyze the performance differences between the FDM, SLS, and MJF fabrication methods to determine the most hermetic and biocompatible configuration.
