Design techno-economic validation university campus Project Details
| Abstract |
This work outlines a stepβbyβstep method for designing, optimizing, and checking the economics of a hybrid microgrid for a university campus. Two software tools are used: HOMER Pro to find the best longβterm economic design, and DIgSILENT PowerFactory to run detailed electrical studies of both steadyβstate and transient behavior. The main goal is to see if renewable sourcesβsolar panels and wind turbinesβcombined with batteries and traditional backup generators can supply the campusβs changing power demand. HOMER Pro calculates the best sizes for all components, aiming to lower the net present cost and the levelized cost of energy while increasing the share of renewables. The resulting design is then imported into
DIgSILENT PowerFactory, where loadβflow, shortβcircuit, and transientβstability analyses are performed for different cases, such as when the microgrid is connected to the main grid or operating alone. This combined simulation approach shows that the proposed hybrid microgrid can be both costβeffective and technically sound, keeping voltage, stability, and power quality within required limits. The study also offers a clear guide for planning and installing microgrids in similar institutions.
