EFFECT SUB-SATURATION OXYGEN LEVEL CANCER Project Details

Abstract

Cancer poses an increasingly prevalent and economically burdensome health issue. While there have been advancements in treating certain cancers and there is improvement in mortality rates, the impact of modern science and therapy on the number of people diagnosed with cancer is minimal. One reason for this lack of progress is the lack of innovative research models in preclinical studies. Current research methods such as 2D cell cultures, fail to accurately capture the in vitro microenvironments of tumors and lack the physiological and functional complexity as well as some native cell arrangements. Furthermore, the decreasing utility of the xenograft mouse model in the era of immunotherapy further exemplifies the need

for innovative in vitro models. This study investigates the impact of sub-saturation oxygen levels, an essential microenvironmental factor, on the growth of cancer cells and the expression of select markers associated with metastasis. The goal is to increase understanding of the role of hypoxia in cancer and to improve preclinical models to enhance therapeutic efficacy testing.
