Energy Consumption Modeling Statistical Analysis Project Details
| Abstract |
Due to rising costs for energy and the need for sustainable practices across industries, the manufacturing sector has been looking for ways to improve energy efficiency. CNC machining processes use large amounts of electrical energy, particularly for spindle rotation, the movement of the feed, and the operation of auxiliary systems. Additionally, poor toolpaths and unnecessary movement of the machine lead to longer machining times and increased total energy use. This study analyzes how CAM-based toolpath strategies affect energy use in CNC milling processes. Using a three-axis CNC milling machine, experimental machining was done on workpieces made of aluminum alloy. Two machining strategies were studied: conventional contour-based toolpaths and through optimized
toolpaths, which are designed to reduce non-productive movement of the machine. A digital power monitoring system was used to precisely measure electrical energy usage during all test runs. The approach was to measure and then analyze the various machining parameters to quantify their effect on the energy used. The hope is to show the existence of CAM-based toolpath adjustments that when combined, lead to a significant decrease in energy usage. This type of study offers a structured approach for energy-efficient process planning within CNC machining environments.
