enhanced performance of hybrid active power filters Project Details
| Abstract |
Power quality degradation due to non-linear loads remains a critical challenge in modern electrical distribution networks. Hybrid Active Power Filters (HAPFs) offer an effective mitigation strategy by combining passive and active filtering elements to suppress harmonic currents and compensate reactive power. However, the dynamic performance of HAPFs heavily relies on the tuning of their control loops. This research addresses the optimization of a Fractional Order Proportional-Integral-Derivative (FOPID) controller for HAPFs using a novel hybrid optimization technique. By merging the exploration capabilities of the Pelican Optimization Algorithm (POA) with the exploitation strengths of the Grey Wolf Optimizer (GWO), the proposed hybrid Pelican-GWO (h-POA-GWO) algorithm systematically tunes the five parameters of the
FOPID controller. The control scheme aims to minimize total harmonic distortion (THD) and improve DC-link voltage regulation under varying load conditions. Simulation models developed in MATLAB/Simulink evaluate the transient and steady-state performance of the optimized HAPF. The methodology provides comprehensive guidance for researchers analyzing metaheuristic optimization in power electronics, offering structured support for evaluating controller robustness, tracking efficiency, and harmonic mitigation performance against conventional tuning methods.
