Abstract

This study compares two methods for detecting broken rotor bar (BRB) faults in closed‑loop induction‑motor drives. The methods are Motor Current Signature Analysis (MCSA) and the Hilbert Transform (HT) approach; both use a Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) to examine the frequency spectrum. To keep the motor’s speed stable and maintain good speed control despite rotor faults, the drive uses a Direct Torque Control (DTC) scheme as its closed‑loop controller. Both diagnostic techniques are tested under several load conditions, with special focus on low‑load and no‑load operation where traditional signature analysis often struggles. The work is validated in two ways: – Numerical simulations in MATLAB/Simulink. – Real‑time experiments with a dSPACE

1104 controller board connected through the Real‑Time Interface (RTI). Results show that each method can detect BRB faults when the motor is loaded. However, the Hilbert Transform‑based spectral analysis is more sensitive and reliable during no‑load operation. This makes the HT approach a strong candidate for online condition monitoring in industrial drive systems.
