| Abstract |
The focus of this M.Tech research is the complex nature of bacterial biofilms. These biofilms hold important relevance in the areas of medicine, biotechnology, and environmental and agricultural sciences. The study is centered around biofilm, which is the study of the biological mechanisms that result in the multi-layered resilience of biofilms and the consequences of such biofilms. Important areas include the role of the biofilm in infections of medical devices, the biofilmβs contribution to the problem of antibiotic resistance, and the immune response to biofilms in chronic conditions such as chronictonsillitis. Additionally, the research investigates new areas such as the interactions of dual species biofilms and the surviving of microbes
within a biofilm through the regulatory mechanisms of pH. Also, this project investigates the activity of some natural compounds (plant-derived phytochemicals) such as garlic and thyme against biofilm-associated resistant pathogens (e.g., MRSA). The project also investigates the beneficial uses of biofilms in biosolids, the use of biofilms in sustainable agriculture and the industrial uses of biofilms to create new and innovative technologies. It is hoped that this research will help develop more innovative control methods in biofilm technology.
