From Basics Frontiers Comprehensive Review Project Details

Abstract

This review examines the evolution of cold plasma technology as a novel method in polymer engineering. The review addresses different types of cold plasma, including subtypes of low pressure cold plasma (radiofrequency capacitively coupled plasma) and atmospheric pressure cold plasma (dielectric barrier and piezoelectric) and their applications. The review addresses the reduced electric field, pressure, type of discharge, type of gas, gas flow rate, substrate temperature, and the gap as important operational parameters and how these parameters affect the properties of the polymers produced or modified. This review also examines the use of cold plasma in polymer surface modification and how it influences surface properties of the polymers (e.g., wettability,

adhesion, and biocompatibility) through surface processes (e.g., surface etching, surface roughening, surface crosslinking and surface functionalization, and changes in surface crystallinity). PECVD (Plasma-Enhanced Chemical Vapor Deposition) is analyzed for the production of thin polymeric films from various precursors. The mechanisms of plasma deposition and plasma polymerization, including Yasuda’s rapid step-growth polymerization (RSGP) and Competitive Ablation Polymerization (CAP), are described in detail to assist in the understanding of advanced design of polymer materials.
