Abstract

The main objective of this research topic is to examine new approaches for customizing the functional properties of biopolymer materials, particularly those made from microorganisms and plants, for use in food contact applications. The research focuses on polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs), bacterial cellulose, starch, carboxymethyl cellulose, and soy protein isolate. The research also examines the different approaches that can be used to improve the performance of the polymers through a combination of chemical modification and the use of active additives, including nano-silica, cellulose nanocrystals, essential oils, and silver nanoparticles. Innovative techniques such as 3D printing and electrospinning are analyzed for their ability to improve the most critical dimensions of composites, including mechanical

strength, barrier performance, and biodegradation. A regulatory restriction concerning the migration of additives, the safety evaluations of materials, and compliance to EU Framework Regulation EC 1935/2004 and the anticipated Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulatory (PPWR) regulations pose significant challenges. The topic also addresses the challenges and high costs associated with the commercialization of microbial polymers and the use of nanomaterials in an industrial setting. It also examines novel approaches such as waste-derived feedstocks and metabolic engineering to address these challenges.
