| Abstract |
Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is a major area of concern. Current approaches, including pharmacotherapy, stenting, or bypass surgery, are not able to incorporate regenerative techniques for the damaged tissue. This M.Tech project investigates the use of functional hydrogels for the treatment of CVD. The study will focus on the design principles of hydrogels comprised of various natural and synthetic single polymers and composites, and review their individual advantages and disadvantages in terms of biocompatibility, mechanical strength, and tunable property. Particular attention will be given to stimuli-responsive hydrogels for on-demand and controlled therapeutic delivery. Hydrogels have numerous applications in scaffolding, cellular carrier, and drug delivery, and will be used to support post-infarction
myocardial regeneration, vascular regeneration, heart valve repair, and management of heart failure, also called hydrogel therapy. The projectβs aim is to address the hurdles to safe implementation of hydrogel therapy in clinical practice, including long-term biocompatibility and functionality with host tissue, thrombogenicity, low tissue integration, and poor compliance to regulatory approval and manufacturing standards. The goal of this study is to direct ongoing efforts in the development of innovative therapies for the treatment of cardiovascular disease using hydrogels.
