High-Resolution Pollution History Since nineteenth is a M.Tech project topic for Environmental Engineering. It gives students a clear starting point for research, implementation planning, and documentation.
High-Resolution Pollution History Since nineteenth Project Details
| Abstract |
This project aims to reconstruct the pollution history of the Grietherorter Oxbow of the Lower Rhine River in Germany during the 19th and 20th centuries. The sediment core of 370 cm undergoes analysis through the screening method of non-target Gas ChromatographyβMass Spectrometry (GCβMS), which is used to identify and quantify Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs). These contaminants are classified into five categories: Aromatic Compounds, Halogenated Compounds, Non-Halogenated Technical Complexes, Personal Care Products and Pharmaceuticals, and Further Functionalized Compounds. The goal of the study is to determine the concentration maxima of the different POPs and to align these concentrations with historical industrial emissions downstream in the Rhine-Ruhr region, particularly during the 20th
centurial peak of industrialization. Significant attention is directed toward the sediment long-term preservation potential of lipophilic pollutant, including, Polychlorinated Biphenyls (PCBs) and Dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT) metabolites, within the oxbow. The objective is to create Chronostratigraphic Markers through the study of distribution patterns and ultimately suggest that the identified pollutants stem from specific industrial operations up to and including coal, chemicals, and agriculture and evaluate the effects of legislative changes.
