| Abstract |
This research investigates the influence of human-AI decision-making structures on cybersecurity outcomes, specifically focusing on data breach risks within organizations. Drawing upon Agency Theory, a conceptual framework is developed to differentiate between an Autonomous AI strategy, where AI systems independently make critical decisions, and an Advisory AI strategy, where AI provides recommendations to human decision-makers. Empirical analysis, utilizing a large language model for classifying job postings linked to panel data from 3,006 U.S. firms, reveals distinct impacts of these strategies. Findings indicate that an Autonomous AI strategy correlates with an increased likelihood of data breaches, whereas an Advisory AI strategy is associated with a reduction in such risks. Furthermore, the
depth of AI deployment is identified as a critical amplifying factor; greater deployment intensifies breach risks under an Autonomous AI paradigm while concurrently enhancing the protective benefits offered by an Advisory AI approach. The study also examines the role of AI governance, demonstrating that robust governance mechanisms do not mitigate the risks associated with Autonomous AI but further augment the security advantages of Advisory AI. These results underscore the fundamental importance of organizational decision authority structuring in determining the security implications of artificial intelligence integration.
