Investigating Non-carcinogenic Risk Hazard Quotient Project Details

Abstract

This study investigated the concentrations of heavy metals associated with airborne Particulate Matter (PM) in high-traffic districts of Tehran, Iran. The primary objective was to determine the non-carcinogenic risk and Hazard Quotient (HQ) of these metals using a descriptive-applied methodology. Six indoor and outdoor stations were established across three high-traffic districts, with sampling conducted in winter 2018, yielding 36 samples. Heavy metals were extracted from fiberglass filters via acid digestion, following ASTM standards, and quantified using an Inductively Coupled Plasma-Optical Emission Spectrometry (ICP-OES) device. Human health risk assessment was performed according to the US EPA standard method. Statistical analysis, including Spearman correlation and Multivariate Analysis of Variance (MANOVA), was conducted

using SPSS. Results indicated varying heavy metal concentrations across districts, with Al>Fe>Pb>Mn>Cu>Zn>Cr>As>Ni>Cd being the predominant order. Significant differences were observed between indoor and outdoor heavy metal concentrations, highlighting distinct exposure profiles. This research provides critical insights into environmental heavy metal pollution and associated health risks in urban high-traffic environments, contributing to public health and environmental management strategies.
