Local Violence as Environmental Exposure Project Details

Abstract

This M.Tech project investigates the connections of local violence, climate-related environmental factors, and public health, specifically with regards to pollution. It proposes a conceptual framework which situates local violence as a serious psychosocial stressor, and primary environmental exposure, especially within an evolving climate context. This project examines the role of violent crime as a psychosocial stressor and how it can enhance the negative health effects of climate-related heat and environmental pollution. An important focus is designing strategies to separate the individual and collective actions of violence, heat, and pollution which impact health, especially child health. This includes defining violence as an environmental phenomenon and examining how it acts to improve

or deteriorate health. The research intends to work towards clarifying the complexities of violence, heat, pollution, and their effects on health. This will enable the creation of integrated assessment models to predict the impacts of public health policies and management of stressors, and to address the environmental issues which communities face. The primary goal of this project is to develop a method to analyze and quantify the synergistic effects of social stressors on the environment and pollutants, specifically focusing on air quality parameters.
